Overview

Construction Technology I involves the formation, installation, maintenance, and repair of buildings, homes, and other structures.  This course provides instruction in reading technical drawings and transforming those drawings into physical structures.

 

 

Learning Objectives: 

Comply with OSHA-10 training requirements. Explain the safety obligations of workers, supervisors, and managers to ensure a safe workplace. Discuss the causes and results of accidents and the impact of accident costs. Define safe work procedures, proper use of personal protective equipment, and working with hazardous chemicals. Identify other potential construction hazards, including hazardous material exposures, welding and cutting hazards and confined spaces.

• Review basic mathematical functions and explain their applications to the construction trades. Explain how to use and read various length measurement tools, including standard and metric rulers and tape measures, and the architect’s and engineer’s scales. Explain decimal-fraction conversions and the metric system, using practical examples. Review basic geometry as applied to common shapes and forms.

• Identify hand tools that are widely used in the construction industry, such as hammers, saws, levels, pullers, and clamps. Explain the specific applications of each tool and show how to use them properly. Discuss important safety and maintenance issues related to hand tools.

• Provide detailed descriptions of commonly used power tools, such as drills, saws, grinders, and sanders. Review applications, proper use, safety, and maintenance. Demonstrate power tool use in on-the-job settings.

• Discuss basic terms for construction drawings, components, and symbols. Explain the different types of drawings (civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing/piping, electrical, and fire protection) and interpret and use drawing dimensions.

• Explain how ropes, chains, hoists, loaders, and cranes are used move material and equipment from one location to another on a job site. Describe inspection techniques and load-handling safety practices. Demonstrate American National Standards Institute (ANSI) hand signals.

• Practice techniques for communicating effectively with co-workers and supervisors. List examples that emphasize the importance of verbal and written information and instructions on the job. Discuss effective telephone and e-mail communication skills.

• Identify the roles of individuals and companies in the construction industry. Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills and computer systems and their industry applications. Review effective relationship skills, effective self-presentation, and key workplace issues such as sexual harassment, stress, and substance abuse.

• Recognize hazards associated with materials handling and explain proper materials handling techniques and procedures. Describe materials handling equipment, and identify appropriate equipment for common job-site tasks.

• Attain readiness to take NCCER CORE curriculum certification exams.
